Functional Hearing Inventory
Funtional Hearing Inventory PDF Print E-mail

It is often difficult to test the hearing of children who are deafblind, visually impaired or have multiple disabilities. Hearing tests can be a challenge to perform and valid results are often difficult to obtain. Yet, it is important to know how these children are using any hearing they might have.

The Functional Hearing Inventory (FHI) is intended to help school staff and/or parents assess the auditory functioning of students within their natural environment. By systematically observing children in their day-to-day encounters, one can gain insight into how, when and where they use their hearing. That documentation can be used to develop interventions and teaching strategies.

The FHI can be used by:

  • professionals in deafblindness, auditory impairment, or visual impairment

  • speech therapists

  • classroom teachers

  • parents and/or primary caregivers

  • occupational therapists

  • physical therapists

  • paraprofessionals

  • others who work with the child on a regular basis

The self-paced, interactive, web-based instruction for administering the FHI uses multimedia, examples and self-assessments to prepare you for using the FHI with the children you interact with.
